Academic breadth and excellence

Through a very broad based curriculum, we aim to ensure that students' future opportunities are protected. Girls are able to make choices each year that suit their abilities and interests and lead to worthwhile qualifications. A focus on learning, and learning how to learn, is the centre of school life. In addition to the formal curriculum, many exciting opportunities provide challenges for the students to extend their interests, talents and abilities to interact with other students from across the school and beyond.

Comments from 2008 ERO Report

  • National Certificates of Educational Achievement results indicate that students continue to achieve above national levels. 
  • Students are challenged, motivated, engaged and focused on their learning. 
  • Across the college, there is a very settled and purposeful working tone. 
  • Key values, such as commitment to learning, self management, social responsibility and respect for others are fostered. 
  • Teachers demonstrate sound subject knowledge and are enthusiastic about teaching and learning.

The Curriculum in Year 9 and Year 10

The subjects offered are based on the seven essential learning areas of the New Zealand Curriculum Framework and also on the local curriculum goals of the school charter. Assessment and reporting is based on the achievement objectives for Levels 4-6 of the national curriculum or equivalent standards. Students in Years 9 and 10 do a wide range of subjects so they will have plenty of choices available to them in the senior school.

Teachers are already developing exciting new units that incorporate the new curriculum document and key competencies. 

SUBJECTS IN YEAR 9

Students do all of these

English, Mathematics and Statistics, Science, Social Studies, Art, Music, Physical Education, Health Education, and Technology. 

In Technology, students will study two technology subjects chosen from: 

Food Technology; Information Technology (IT); Soft Materials Technology (Fabrics); Hard Materials Technology(Workshop); Graphics 

Students choose two of these

Chinese, Drama and Dance, Economics, French,  Latin, Reading, ESOL (English for speakers of other languages), Samoan, Te Reo Maori


Subjects in Year 10

We are currently reviewing the Year 10 course for 2010.  There may be changes to this range of option subjects.

Students do all of these

English, Mathematics and Statistics, Science, Social Studies, Physical Education, Health Education.

Students choose three of these

Art, Chinese, Fabrics and Design, Drama and Dance, ESOL, Food Technology, Economics, French, Graphics and Design, Geography, Latin, Information Management, History, Maori, Music, Reading, Workshop Technology and Samoan.


The Curriculum in the Senior School

We are proud of the academic successes girls achieve in external examinations in the senior school. We also follow with interest the outstanding academic and vocational careers of our graduating students over the years. These include Rhodes Scholars and women reaching the top of their professions. A focus on course and career counselling helps all students leave school with worthwhile qualifications and a direction to pursue in further education or employment.

Students choose three of these

Accounting, Art, Maori and Pacific Art, Chinese, Dance, Drama, Economics, ESOL, Fabrics and Design, Food and Nutrition, French, Geography, Graphics, History, Information Management, Latin, Maori, Music, Physical Education, Samoan, Workshop Technology.


Subjects in Year 12 and 13

Students do all of these

English (or Alternative English). Some Year 13 students gain exemptions from studying English in order to pursue specialist courses.

Students choose

Five further options in Year 12 and four further options in Year 13.
