Classics
“To understand the ancient world is thus to have an advantage in the modern world.”
Classical Studies is about learning how ancient civilisations still influence us today!
What is Classical Studies?
Classical Studies is the study of the civilisations of classical Greece and Rome without the study of the classical languages, Greek and Latin. It is a ‘multidisciplinary’ subject including a number of different types of study such as history, literature, art, philosophy and science.
Why Classical Studies?
In classical Greece and Rome the origins of much of our art, science, literature, law, philosophy, politics and religion are to be found.
It is a subject where you can see the connections between these intellectual disciplines.
You learn how to think, analyse, interpret, research and present an argument.
Our aims are:
- To critically think about the interesting people and ideas we study, and encourage intellectual curiosity.
- To develop an appreciation of the achievements of the ancients and how these still influence us today.
- To acquaint students with the cultural roots of western civilisation.
- To equip students with a variety of skills in both literary and historical research and interpretation, and in textual and evidential analysis.
- To enable students to develop and present an argument clearly and logically, supported by relevant evidence.
