Music

Music is offered as full year courses at every level, starting with core Music in Year 9 and then being taken as an option subject up to Scholarship level after that. At Year 12 and 13 Vocal Studies is also offered as a full subject with Level 1 and 2 NCEA Achievement Standards and Unit Standards. There are also opportunities for tuition in many instruments, including voice, for a subsidised fee.

WEGC has a proud tradition in music and currently has four choirs, a school orchestra, a concert band, chamber music groups, school rock and pop bands, and a ukulele band.

2009

CPA Orchestra at the Pines

This Orchestra played an Emily Wilby instrumentation of a piece for voice and strings.  Roza Brajkovich-Payne was the soloist.

Orchestra and Concert Band Tour

On the 9 June the bands played to some of Wellington East's contributing schools.

Chamber Music Contest

Wellington East entered 5 groups.

Chamber Music Soirées

Were held on the 8 and 15 June.

The Big Sing

Wellington East entered four choirs with three of them student directed.

Rave Reviews for Music Department Concert

The annual department showcase concert was held in May.  Many bands and choirs performed at a high level.

Old-Girl Wins National Singing Contest

Old-girl Mabel Faletolu (whose stage name is Aivale Cole) returned to East to film a clip with Campbell Live after winning the Lexus Song Quest competition. More info.

Cultural Concert

The Famine fundraiser provided another opportunity for choirs and soloists to perform for an audience, with the barbershop groups debuting their talent.

Easter Service

Several groups performed at the Easter Service.

2008

General

The orchestra was involved in the musical Les Miserables and there was a performance by the Small Choir at the Welsh National Festival of Singing.  There were two performances at Government House by the Small Choir

Choral Festival Successes 

This year we entered three choirs in the Choral Festival and won the Best Performance of a Maori Song category with our Small Choir as well as three of our student conductors winning awards, from the School Choir and Multi Choir.

Three Chamber Music groups entered the Wellington Chamber Music Contest.  One group performed a composition specially commissioned by the school by the school for the Senior Group.

Prize Giving

In November, our whole school Prize Giving in the Town Hall includes items by all major music groups and the whole school singing.
