Learning
Science
Science is compulsory in Years 9 to 11. In year 11 we offer two courses, full NCEA Level 1 Science (Sc100), and a Science course (Sc101) for students who have had difficulties in Year 10 and need to gain more confidence in this subject. Students are able to gain Credits for NCEA in this course. In 2009 we are planning to offer a 2 year Level 1 course (Sc102) for students who need to work at a slower pace.
At Years 12 and 13 Science splits up into Level 2 and Level 3, Biology, Chemistry and Physics. These subjects are optional. Students may take any combination of these subjects. At Year 12 we also offer a Science course Sc201 which offers Level 1 credits and a Science course Sc200, offering Level 2 credits. Sc201 is a natural follow-on from the Year 11 course (Sc101) but may also be taken by students who still need to gain some Level 1 credits and don't want to repeat the Level 1 NCEA Science course. Science 200 gives students who do not wish to specialise in individual Sciences a chance to continue gaining Science credits at Level 2. This year we are introducing a new course in year 11. It is called Sc102 and will be a 2 year course covering the same content as Sc100, but at a slower pace.

Chemistry GMOLES win Best Dressed
One of the Year 12 teams at the VUW quiz won best costumes, with their play on the 'mole' pun, and another took out the covested clamp stand decorating contest.
Physicists Earn Trip to Japan
Georgia Stewart will be travelling to Japan later this year for The Asian Science Camp. Julia Wells was initially selected, but could not attend due to other commitments. Her sensible actions earned her a scholarship from VUW when they read about it in the Dominion Post.
Silver for Physicists
This year Wellington East competed in the International Young Physicist Tournament for the first time. The team consisted of Julia Wells, Georgia Stewart, Shannon Tong, Maddy Cormack, Roza Brajkovich-Payne and Jessica Coppell, and each student has worked on solving a complicated Physics problem.
Julia, Georgia and Shannon went to the Wellington Regional Final and gave 12 minute presentations to explain their solutions in front of a panel of judges. They then had to defend their solution as a student from another school tried to oppose it in what we call a ‘Physics Fight’.
Wellington East came second in their Regional Tournament and was awarded silver medals. The girls went on to compete in the National Final which took place at Kings College on Saturday 21st March. They competed well against tough opposition and were placed sixth.
The Australasian Science Competition
This will be held on the 10th June 2009. Entries willl still be taken in the first week on Term 2. We would like to see more entries from year 9 and 10 students. It is a good opportunity to extend their knowledge. Entry fee is $7.50.
Hands On Science 2009
Four students, 2 from Year 12 and 2 from Year 11 (2008) attended this in January. They had a wonderful time and will be writing about their experiences in the School Magazine at the end of the year. Information about the 2010 course will be available on www.otago.ac.nz/handsonscience
Austalian Chemistry Quiz: This will be held at the end of July, for students in Year 12 and 13 Chemistry. Some students in year 11 Science will also enter.
Moodle in Science: The Science Department has been very active in setting up pages on the Learning Management System website, Moodle. There are resources there for Level 2 and 3 Biology, Chemistry and Physics and Level 1 and 2 Science courses. Students are encouraged to make use of these both in class and at home. As well as providing a means of catching up on work missed, it gives links to other useful web pages and a chance for students to extend themselves and submit work to their teachers.
