Event Name Media Coup for Activists
Start Date 23rd Jun 2009
End Date
Duration N/A
Description

See the protest on the TV3 news site, with story and video and the Dominion Post site for a full story.

A protest organised by the Active Collective gained national media coverage on Monday.  They gathered over 20 people to protest outside the Embassy of Iran, in Hataitai.

They had banners and pictures and symbolically 'gagged' students in order to make their points about the voilent reaction to protestors following the recent elections in Iran.  The students were concernd about there being a break-down in the freedom of speech, with media coverage banned.

Julia Wells, one of the leaders, had organised media coverage and their protest led the news on Channel 3 and was also covered in the Dominion Post.

While the Active Collective are based at Wellington East, they are student led and independant, not always necessary voicing the opinions of the school.  Their proactive and thoughtful protest is a good example of how teenagers can try to voice their concerns and be active within their community.
