Success for Stunning ChoirsMusicDept3

At last night's prestigious Choral Festival, our choirs won three awards.  Spectators said it was the best they've seen our girls perform in years and it is even more amazing that we had four choirs there, more than usual, and that three of them were student directed.

  • The Small Choir won best interpretation of a contemporary song, with their version of 'Smooth Criminal' by Michael Jackson, and
  • Small Choir won best performance of a song by a NZ composer, with 'Lullaby'.
  • Multi Choir won a highly commended for their student directors, Seborah Hanipale and Georgia Gray

The Multi Choir award was the only such award given on the night to a student director and is the third year in a row the Multi Choir has earned it, with Seborah's sister, Etta, getting it the two previous times.

Emily Wilby, who is in the Small Choir, says that no other school got more than one main award - so to get three was a coup.

The four choirs involved from our school included the elite Small Choir, the Senior Choir, the Junior Choir and the Multi Choir.  The latter three choirs are all student directed, which is a point of pride for the school, as most schools have teacher directed  choirs.  The Small Choir is directed by Alex Hay, who is an old-girl who was Music Prefect about five years ago and she went on to study music and composition at university.
