| Description | About eight years ago a tradition was started. Year 10s, as a way of ending the year on a high, were challenged to create a class Stage Challenge item. It is a totally student-led activity, with the class choosing a director, choreographer, music editor, make up artists and much more. They are judged on elements from creativity and participation to best set. While it is no secret that it was coming, they were only this week given the official go-ahead to begin planning by the PE Department. Rumour has it that 1014 are out of the gates and flying, with a theme already decided and choreography begun. Mrs Miller, the Head of Dance and Drama, has picked them as the class to beat at this stage. Over the years staff and students have been amazed at the quality of productions that have come out of the project. Our current head girl, Kristin Ng, was part of a successful interpretation of 'Where the Wild Things Are' and her performance as Max, complete with her onesy pjamas, was a highlight. There is also the much loved tradition of staff putting on their own song-and-dance numbers, which have included versions of 'The Sound of Music' (with Mr Chalmers as the 'lonely goat herd') and 'Dancing with the Stars' (with Mr Ball attempting to dance a tango with Mrs Anderson). Last year was 'High School Musical' and staff dressed as jocks, nerds and 'pretties' in an almost professional take on the popular film. Mrs Haughton was appropriately cast as 'the new girl'. The staff took it so seriously they even had mandatory lunch-time practices. The Year 10 Stage Challenges will be performed in the final week of school, after the Year 9 Pantomimes, with the staff item serving as the closing number. Seniors are welcome to come back, support their Tuakana classes and be greatly entertained. |
