Earthquake Strengthening Update January 2012

There has been some significant rethinking of the approach to the strengthening of earthquake prone buildings at Wellington East Girls' College by the Ministry of Education. These changes will have an impact on the nature of the strengthening work, the time frame and provision of space for relocation of teaching, administration and student support services while the building takes place.

The second phase will begin as soon as possible. There is no longer any expectation that we occupy the Main Building before work has been completed. Decisions have not yet been made about the form this strengthening will take.

Additional classrooms and toilets have been provided on the top field for Social Science and Economics teaching. More appropriate temporary accommodation for student support services and administration will be provided by the end of Term 1.

The Ministry of Education new schools team are involved in the development of a master plan for the college which will involve looking at the site as a whole. It will take into account the strengthening needs of other buildings, the changing nature of the curriculum and the significant roll growth anticipated over the next few years.

This means that we begin 2012 in a stronger position with the teaching spaces we need, a plan for more adequate relocation of staff and the prospect of designing spaces relevant to 21st century learning.

Softball World Champs

Kuraroa Ratu-James is currently taking the field in the 2011 Junior Women's World Softball Championships in South Africa.

Eight Nations are competing at the World Champs; New Zealand, China, Czech Republic, America, Canada, Puerto Rico, South Africa and Botswana. The tournament began on December 8th, and since then the NZ team has a record of 4 wins and 2 losses, currently placing them third in their pool, behind the US and Canada.

They have a game against Botswana left, and then it's playoffs on December 15th.

The NZ team spent a couple of days in Australia and left there for SA last week. The Ratu-James whanau left to join Kura on Sunday and were looking forward to meeting up with their girl.

Year 10 Community Days

After a morning working on sapling maintenance and orienteering skills, four year 10 classes relax at Charles Plimmer Park.

All Year 10s have spent two days working with the Park Rangers in the Town Belt, Plunket Educators and families and each other. The girls can be proud of the service they have given to the community, and the learning they have earnt. WEGC is proud of their contribution.

Changing of the Guards

The final day of school had its usual, wonderful rituals. The Prefects of 2011 handed over to the 2012 group and the end of their era was celebrated through song, dance and balloons.

Leaving teachers were also farewelled. Kate Gainsford, Deputy Principal. sang a waiata, with the support of the other staff from Rotorua. She is moving on to be Principal of Aotea College.

The head prefects for 2012 were both greeted with standing ovations. Deputy Head Prefect, Rangi, was overwhelmed to be the first prefect in her family and Head Prefect, Grace, said she felt truly blessed to be given this responsibility.

The prize giving ceremony was held at the Town Hall last Thursday. The music was dramatic and polished, with wonderful soloists and a memorable whole school performance including 'rain' noises. The guest speaker was world champion mountain runner, Melissa Moon.
