Term 1 Review

We kicked term one off with a bang welcoming the Year 9s, staff members and new-comers into an environment that is more than just a school, it’s a community.

Term 1 has been an exciting and busy term for everyone as the majority of us have finished signing up for sports teams, choirs, cultural groups and Stage Challenge and are now getting stuck into it.

Here is a little snippet of what we, as a school, participated in last term.

We got the ball rolling with our first whole school event - Athletics Day. Congratulations to the Pac Men who won fashion in the field, the prefects who finally won both relays against the teachers and to Bledisloe, mighty Bledisloe, who took the Athletics Day title for 2009.

In Week 4 we awarded those students who excelled in 2008's NCEA assessments, who received Excellence endorsement and were awarded badges to show there achievement. In Level 2 Anna Robinson and Julia Wells  were the top achievers, gaining the most Excellence credits at Wellington East in 2008, well done.

We have talented physicists who competed at Regionals and ended up coming 2nd. They competed the following week at Nationals and did exceptionally well. Two of our students, Julia Wells and Georgia Stewart, were selected for all expense paid trip to Japan to expand on their physics learning, though Julia could not attend.

The Tuakana got the opportunity to strengthen their relationship with their Year 9 Teina classes at camp.  They had to over-come challenges, participate in various activities, and meet new peers, which ended up being a lot of fun. The Year 13s battled tough weather at the Dragon Boating Festival the following Sunday and did an awesome job, just losing to Chilton St James in the A grade finals.

The next week the Dance Committee prepared the hall for our very first Junior Dance where everyone ripped up the dance floor with their fantastic moves. It was a fun and successful night. That weekend a group of Year 13s, lead by Anna, ran their hearts out in Relay for Life which was forty hours of intense relaying. Our girls finished second. This was an awesome achievement considering it was our first time taking part in this event. Thanks to everyone who donated money, sang, ran, and most of all to everyone who has supported us in making it this far.

Week 9 would be the second biggest Tournament Week of the year. We sent four teams away to compete in Volleyball, Waka Ama, Canoe Polo, and Softball Nationals. The Softball girls made it to the grand finals to take the win for the second year running. The team captain, Yvonne Burgess, managed to grab tournament MVP. All teams did very well in representing Wellington East and making the rest of us proud to be East girls.

So, why do we love East? There are lots of reasons but we’ll just stick to the basic ones.  It starts from the moment we put on our mighty blue and gold uniform and walk into the quad to see other girls interacting with one another and having fun. We also love: the smell of the canteen food at all hours of the day, singing songs in assembly like “Breaking Free” and not caring what anyone else thinks, showing off our mad skills on the court, field, or turf, bringing home top academic awards, and finally playing our game and doing what we do best since 1925 in delivering the goods.

This term was a fun experience for everyone including the staff members. We had our ups and downs, however, we all managed to work through it and experience new things. Term 2 is yet another busy but fun term with a lot of opportunities to expand networks and grow.

The new staff and students are no longer looked at as being new. They have embraced East culture and we are all in the same boat moving forward at a rapid pace. I personally have learnt to give everything a go. It doesn’t matter if you are unfamiliar with the task, you need to push enough doors to see which ones are open. “Well done is better than well said, you would rather live it than just hear it”- Chris Dodds. I look forward to creating more scrap book memories, learning off fellow students and living it up!
