Students

Komputer Kooks

WEGC Komputer Kooks are a comparatively new club in the school (this is only their third year of existence) but they have already carved a reputation for themselves as being enthusiastic, innovative ICT-focussed achievers.

The ‘Komputer Kooks’ club is led by the Technology Prefect, Priya Patel. It consists of about 25 senior students who are computer literate (they often tend to study Computing, Design, or Media Studies so already have good IT knowledge and skills), and enjoy the problem-solving and creative environment of ICT. They also provide a service to others by helping those in need of updating their IT skills, and this includes students, parents, and teachers. The Kooks work with staff to help them develop their computing skills and knowledge. They believe that it is important for teachers to be able to use technology appropriately in their classrooms, to prepare students for an IT world increasingly based on a knowledge economy. The Kooks also train parents of the school in basic IT skills on a weekly basis. To read more about this click here or for the brochure click here.

Belonging to the Komputer Kooks club provides students with the opportunity to further develop and expand their own skills by participating in lunchtime training sessions, entering digital competitions and attending events which encourage them to become leaders and innovators in ICT.

10-Kooks-2009

Recognition Won by Komputer Kooks
  • In 2009 they also had three of their members win their section at the Technology Innovation Day hosted by Otago University on 26 June. This led to a feature on them and their innovative idea which was published in the Dominion Post on Friday 3 July 2009. Congratulations Chandni, Reda and Neelam!

Kooks Activities:

  • We have designed our own hoodies and each year a Kook gets hers to wear with pride.
  • Each Monday and Wednesday lunchtime we open and monitor a computer room for students to use for homework or research.
  • Each year we attend the regional Tech Hui along with other Wellington Secondary Schools and get as involved as we can with everything going on. It involves creating a presentation for the day.
  • Every second Wednesday morning when teachers undertake professional learning we come early and tutor those who want to learn IT skills.
  • We run a junior Kooks’ elective on Wednesdays during a special elective period so that the younger students can develop their IT skills.
  • On Wednesdays after school from 3.30–5.00 pm we run a special parent-tutoring class for those parents who would love to learn some IT skills themselves. Each Kook has her own parent to work with each week.
  • Our Technology Prefect works with a media student to produce the Wellington East Girls’ College slide show every term.
  • We have weekly meetings on Friday lunchtimes during which time we do our organising and the business side of things, then we spend time learning more IT skills ourselves.
  • On Thursday lunchtimes we learn Flash with Mrs Flanagan. We are interested in entering a Flash competition, and the Net Guide Web Challenge.
  • In Term 3 we will learn Gaming with Mr Harford on Thursday lunchtimes.

At the end of the year we will be presented with special Kooks’ certificates to thank us for our hard work, and we have a final farewell lunch.
