Music Groups

Wellington East has always taken pride in calling itself a musical school. Our strong music department supports a wide range of talents, from choral singing to concert band, chamber music, orchestra and a rock band. In 2010 the Music Prefect is Emily Wilby, who is a top level violinist and also in the orchestra and small choir.

A heart-felt farewell concert was organised in order to celebrate and honour Mrs Jones, who is retiring at the end of 2009 after 25 years of teaching here. See a summary and further photos from this festive event.
Term Three
Big Sing
The Big Sing was held in June. With four choirs competing, we won three major prizes, but were not selected for the Finale.
Orchestra Tour
The WEGC Orchestra and Concert Band toured Primary and Intermediate schools in June. It is one of the many ways we reach out to the community as a school.
Music Department Concert
In Term 2 an excellent concert was held with all groups performing. See images from it here.
Term Two
Term Two was very busy for the Music Department! Four choirs competed in the regional Big Sing competition; our audition choir the, Small Choir; as well as 3 student-directed choirs: Junior Choir, Senior Choir and Multichoir. Several groups also enterd the regional Chamber Music competitions. Our School Orchestra went on its traditional tour of Wellington primary schools and also performed in a Student-led assembly prior to this in preparation. Dark Attitude entered Rock Quest regionals. Many of these groups performed at the Music Department Concert in May. It was a busy term full with beautiful music.
Old girl, Aivale Cole, won the prestigious Lexus Song Quest. Afterwards she came back to East and was filmed for an item on Campbell Live with Mrs Jones.
Term One
The year started very well in the Music Department, with huge numbers of girls joining choirs in the first few weeks, new members joining the School Orchestra and girls forming new chamber music groups. The Music Committee, aided by some dedicated music students, had a extremely successful working bee to clean out the instrument cupboard and fix broken stands and instrument cases. We also held a Talent Quest (won by Anna Robinson and Elise Hoggard) and an Easter Raffle to fundraise for new music stands and percussion instruments. We are also very excited about getting internet in the Music Department, and an updated version of the music software Sibelius.
