On behalf of the Wellington East Girls’ College Board of Trustees, it is my great pleasure to announce the appointment of Gael Ashworth to the role of Principal. Gael will take up her position on 8 July 2019.

Gael comes into the role at a significant point in the school’s history. She has been a part of the senior leadership team that has driven the rebuild of the school’s main block, and one of her key areas of focus in her new role will be settling the school into the new building. Her experience will serve the school well as she oversees the ongoing building projects relating to science blocks and the completion of the new main entrance for the school.

Wellington East has a proud history of leadership and the Board is confident Gael will continue to honour this history as Principal.

Gael has been deputy Principal at WEGC for the past eight years and in that time has built and embedded a professional learning community at the college, shifting the focus to an inquiry based model. Gael has also played a strong leadership role supporting the Guidance and Hauora team at Wellington East and has led the introduction of a number of wellbeing programmes including Mates and Dates and a range of digital safety initiatives.

The Board was impressed with Gael’s strategic thinking and her deep connection with Wellington East as evidenced by her support for equity, partnership and diversity.

We will celebrate and farewell current Principal, Sally Haughton at a series of school and community functions in June after twelve years leading the school through significant change.

I hope you will all join me in congratulating Gael and wishing her every success in her new role.

Nga mihi

Amanda
